What is medical coding?

The AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) describes medical coding as “the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes”.

In order to assign these codes, medical coders have to be proficient in certain classification systems such as ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS Level II, etc. Knowledge of payment models such as Risk Adjustment and HCC (Hierarchal Condition Category) coding is also required for medical coding.
